About Montgomery

Montgomery is a thriving community with a rich history, excellent schools, diverse recreation opportunities and a collective commitment to preserving open land and protecting natural resources. The community has successfully merged rural and suburban lifestyles in a cosmopolitan region. According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau figures for 2010, there are approximately 22,254 people calling Montgomery home.

Established in 1702 by Dutch and English Settlers, Montgomery Township continues to combine a unique convenience of location with the lifestyle features sought by residents and businesses. Located in the southern portion of Somerset County – six miles from Princeton University and roughly half way between New York City and Philadelphia – the Township is an historic 32 square mile community with an agricultural heritage. It is a thriving “wealth belt” community with a rich history, excellent schools, diverse recreational opportunities and a collective commitment to preserving open land and protecting natural resources.  Nearly one-third of the Township is preserved open space or farmland and many historic structures and places have received landmark status.

The Township is served by State Highway Route 206 and County Routes 601, 518 and 522. Routes 1, 22, 27, 202, 287 and 78 are also nearby.  NJ Transit Northeast Corridor rail line and Amtrak provide rail service to New York City and Philadelphia at the nearby Princeton Junction Train Station.  The Princeton Airport is conveniently located in town. Corporate neighbors include several Fortune 500 companies including Johnson and Johnson, Bloomberg Financial, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Merrill Lynch.  Area hospitals include Princeton Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Hunterdon Medical Center and Somerset Medical Center.

Montgomery Township is part of a bold new initiative by Congressman Rush Holt called Einstein’s Alley. It capitalizes on the area’s intellectual powerhouses including Princeton University, Rutgers University, Princeton Plasma Physics Lab, Institute for Advanced Study, Sarnoff Corporation and other leading research institutes and is making central New Jersey a national leader in attracting and supporting innovative companies.   Similar to California's Silicon Valley or North Carolina's Research Triangle, Einstein's Alley is envisioned as a home to vibrant communities and cutting-edge companies.

Montgomery Township is a carefully planned community where real estate values are high, and reflect the town’s status as one of the strongest residential real estate markets in the State.

Traffic Circulation

Recent planning efforts have studied the southern portion of Montgomery Township including the Route 518 and Route 206 intersection and its surrounding areas. The most significant aspect of the report is the plan for a series of loop roads to relieve traffic congestion on Route 206 between Route 518 and Cherry Valley Road. For specific information and status on these roads, please contact the Planning Office. Here are some current planning reports on traffic circulation and land use in this area:
